Figuring out how many boxes of laminate flooring to order comes down to three steps: measure your room, add a waste factor, then divide by the box coverage and round up. Get it right and you avoid both the headache of running short mid-installation and the cost of ordering far more than you need.
Step 1: Measure Your Room
For a rectangular room, multiply the length by the width in feet. A 12 x 15 room gives you 180 square feet. Measure to the nearest half foot and always measure the widest points, including any bump-outs or alcoves.
L-shaped rooms are easy to handle. Break the floor plan into two rectangles, calculate each section separately, and add the totals together. Closets count too. Flooring runs continuously into closet floors, so include that square footage in your total.
Avoid measuring wall-to-wall carpet or old tile and calling it your room size. Pull back a corner or measure from the baseboard to the opposite wall with a tape measure for accuracy.
Step 2: Add Your Waste Factor
No room installs without waste. Cuts at doorways, around cabinets, and along walls generate off-cuts you cannot reuse on the other side of the room. You also want extra boards on hand for future repairs, since laminate is manufactured in batches and the same color can vary slightly between runs.
Standard waste allowances:
- Straight lay (parallel to walls): add 10%
- Diagonal (45-degree angle): add 15%
- Herringbone or chevron: add 20%
Multiply your room square footage by the waste multiplier. A 180 sq ft room with a straight lay becomes 180 x 1.10 = 198 sq ft.
Step 3: Convert Square Footage to Boxes
The box label tells you how much area one box covers. Name Flooring's Nature Bliss 12mm laminate covers 19.08 sq ft per box. Divide your adjusted square footage by the per-box coverage, then round up to the next whole number.
198 sq ft / 19.08 sq ft per box = 10.38, round up to 11 boxes.
Always round up. Ordering 10 boxes when you need 10.38 means stopping work while you wait for a new shipment. It also risks a slight dye lot mismatch if that color sells out between your orders.
The Formula
(Room sq ft x waste multiplier) / box coverage = boxes needed, rounded up
Worked Examples
12 x 15 bedroom, straight lay, Nature Bliss (19.08 sq ft/box):
180 sq ft x 1.10 = 198 sq ft
198 / 19.08 = 10.38 → order 11 boxes
280 sq ft open-concept living and dining area, diagonal install:
280 sq ft x 1.15 = 322 sq ft
322 / 19.08 = 16.87 → order 17 boxes
Whole-floor install, 3 rooms totaling 450 sq ft, straight lay:
450 sq ft x 1.10 = 495 sq ft
495 / 19.08 = 25.94 → order 26 boxes
Use the Built-In Calculator
The Nature Bliss product page has a coverage calculator built right in. Enter your room length and width, check the diagonal install box if needed, and it calculates boxes for you. You can also use the area calculator inside the tool if you have multiple rooms to combine.
Before You Place Your Order
Buy all your boxes in a single order when possible. Laminate comes off the production line in batches, and the color tone can shift subtly from one run to the next. Ordering a second shipment weeks later to top up carries a small risk of mismatched boards where the two batches meet.
Keep a few spare boxes after installation. One or two boards can crack from a heavy appliance drop or a long-standing water spill years down the road. Having boards from the same dye lot means a repair that is nearly invisible.
If you want to confirm the color in your space before committing, order a free sample. We ship to Richmond, Metro Vancouver, and across BC. You can hold the board against your walls and cabinets in natural light, then order with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many boxes of laminate do I need for a 12 x 12 room?
A 12 x 12 room is 144 sq ft. With 10% added for waste that becomes 158.4 sq ft. Dividing by 19.08 sq ft per box (Nature Bliss) gives 8.3 boxes. Order 9 boxes.
Do I need to add waste even for a simple rectangular room?
Yes. Cuts at walls, doorways, and transitions cannot be reused, and you need spare boards for future repairs. Skipping the waste allowance is the most common reason people run short mid-job. The 10% standard is well established and reliable.
What if I run out of flooring mid-installation?
Contact us at 604-910-6518 with the lot number from your existing boxes. We will check if that dye lot is still available. If it is not, the nearest matching lot may still be close enough, but it is worth checking before committing to additional boards.
Can I return unopened boxes I don't use?
Yes, subject to our return conditions. Unopened, undamaged boxes in original packaging are eligible for return. See our refund policy for the complete terms before ordering extra stock.
Does it matter which direction I lay the boards when calculating waste?
Yes. A straight lay parallel to the longest wall uses about 10% waste. A diagonal install at 45 degrees generates more off-cuts at every wall and needs 15%. Herringbone and chevron patterns are the most wasteful at 20%. Choose your direction before calculating.
